Understanding Prompts

A prompt is the instruction or question you give to an AI tool. The quality of your prompt directly affects the quality of the output you receive.

Simple Tips for Writing Effective Prompts

  1. Be specific and clear: Instead of "write about dogs," try "write a 200-word introduction about golden retrievers as family pets."
  2. Provide context: Let the AI know who you are or what you're trying to achieve. For example, "I'm a teacher creating a lesson plan for 5th graders about photosynthesis."
  3. Use examples: Show the AI what you want. "Write three marketing slogans similar to 'Just Do It' but for a bakery."
  4. Break complex tasks into steps: Instead of asking for everything at once, work through your project step by step.
  5. Iterate and refine: If the first result isn't perfect, ask the AI to modify it. "Make this more casual" or "Add more technical details."
  6. Specify format and length: Tell the AI how you want the output structured, whether it's a bullet list, paragraph, table, or specific word count.

Example 1: Recreating Kean University's Mascot in Different Styles

I used Google Gemini's Nano Banana to transform photos of Kean University's mascot into different poses and outfits:

Here are the AI-generated variations:

I also created various posters for the competition using ChatGPT, Sora, and Nano Banana.

Here's an example prompt that ChatGPT helped me write:

Use the uploaded image as the main character of a vertical poster. Reinterpret the mascot in a Japanese manga / anime illustration style, keeping the mascot's face shape, eyes, and expression clearly recognizable.

The character should feel cool and slightly unsettling, not overtly horror. Create a visual concept where the mascot and a human anime character feel merged or overlapping, with their facial structure aligned — eyes, nose, and mouth line up naturally.

One side should suggest the mascot as a mask or outer layer, while the other reveals a human anime face underneath. The transition between the two should feel organic and imperfect (uneven edge, subtle texture, worn surface), but not overly literal or graphic.

Style and mood: • Sharp manga linework • Dramatic contrast and lighting (cool highlights, strong shadows) • Clean, stylish, cinematic anime tone • "Cool scary" rather than dark or grotesque

Composition: • Vertical layout • Character as the clear focal point (mid-shot or close-up) • Balanced, intentional composition — not chaotic

Text to include: • "2nd Kean Cup AI Competition" • "Theme: Anime"

Typography should feel modern anime / manga inspired, sharp and confident.

Leave a large, clean white rectangle at the bottom: • Solid white • No text or graphics inside • Clearly separated from the artwork • Sized for future event details

Overall feeling: stylish, mysterious, cool, slightly eerie, clearly inspired by Japanese anime aesthetics. Avoid chibi style, Western cartoon look, exaggerated horror, or misaligned facial features.
